Baroness Murphy keynote speaker at Conference

Elaine Murphy, Baroness Murphy of Aldgate, will be a keynote speaker at Headway Suffolk’s Conference on 17 May 2023, which will take place at Kesgrave Conference and Community Centre.

The conference will focus on living positively with a disability and will feature speakers throughout the day giving presentations on a range of subjects around this.

Baroness Murphy trained as a psychiatrist and went on to become the Foundation Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of London.

In November 2020, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

In presenting her award, Dr Adrian James, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, described Baroness Murphy as “a pioneering academic psychiatrist who edited the pre-eminent journal for her specialty of old age psychiatry.”

Dr James added: “But it is her role as a medical manager for which she will be most remembered, rising to the top not only in the mental health sector but also across the whole of the medical profession. She is a world-leading psychiatrist, academic, manager and leader and it is wonderful to be able to recognise her through this award.”

Baroness Murphy has been a politically independent peer in the House of Lords since 2004, where she has a special interest in mental health and social care. She was also formerly a UK advisor on mental health to the World Health Organisation.

She is Vice-President at the Alzheimer’s Society and will give a presentation on dementia at Headway Suffolk’s 2023 Conference.

Baroness Murphy said: “Dementia is the commonest of the devastating neurological conditions that people have to cope with and there is no magic bullet in sight to offer a cure.

“In my talk, I will explore some of the challenges and what can be done by government and other organisations to improve the lives of individuals and their families.”

Helen Fairweather, CEO of Headway Suffolk, said: “Headway Suffolk are very excited about hearing Baroness Murphy speak about dementia. We are so fortunate that someone with so much knowledge and is so busy is happy to support our conference and charity.”

Headway Suffolk will continue to announce speakers and sponsors for the 2023 Conference – Living Positively with a Disability.
